What We Believe Has Power

As athletes, we've learned that what we believe has incredible power to shape our reality. Our beliefs - about ourselves, our abilities, the world around us - have a profound impact on our experience and outcomes. This is one of the most important lessons we've learned in our athletic careers.

We've recognized that we have a choice in what we believe. We can entertain limiting, negative thoughts that hold us back, or we can consciously shift our perspective to more empowering beliefs. By challenging our self-defeating thoughts and replacing them with confident, optimistic mindsets, we've unlocked new levels of potential and performance.

The key is understanding that happiness is not about the events themselves, but about the relationship between those events and our expectations. Happiness = Events - Expectations. When our experiences meet or exceed our expectations, we feel content and at peace. But when our experiences fall short, we feel disappointment and frustration.

The great thing is, we have the power to influence both sides of that equation. While we can't always control the external events in our lives, we can absolutely choose how we respond to them. We can set our expectations in a way that allows us to be satisfied, even in the face of challenges. And we can consciously shape our perspective to find the positive, even in difficult circumstances.

For example, let's say we have a big competition coming up. In the past, we might have set our expectations sky-high, convinced that we had to win or else we were failures. But now, we try to take a more balanced approach. We still have big dreams and ambitions, but we temper them with realism. We focus on the process, on doing our absolute best, on learning and growing - not just on the outcome. That way, even if we don't win, we can still feel proud of our effort and see it as a step in the right direction.

Or let's say we have a bad training session, where we just can't seem to get our technique right no matter how hard we try. In the past, we might have beaten ourselves up, dwelling on our shortcomings and feeling like frauds. But now, we try to shift our perspective. We acknowledge the frustration, but then we look for the lesson. What can we learn from this experience? How can we use it to get better? We might even find something positive in the struggle - a chance to develop more patience, or to problem-solve in the moment.

It's not easy to maintain a positive, empowered mindset all the time. Changing our beliefs and perspectives takes constant vigilance and practice. But we've learned that it's worth the effort, because when we harness the power of what we believe, there's no limit to what we can achieve.

By choosing to see the possibilities rather than the limitations, to focus on growth and learning rather than just outcomes, and to find the silver linings even in our struggles, we unlock a level of fulfillment and success that would otherwise be out of reach. Our beliefs don't just shape our athletic performance - they shape our entire lives.

That's why we know that what we believe has power. It's not just a platitude, but a core truth that we've experienced firsthand. And it's a lesson we'll continue to apply, day in and day out, as we strive to become the best versions of ourselves, both on and off the field.
